Tribute From Kanayo Alexander Duru

I remember my grandfather’s endless love for his family most. Every time he made the trip from Nigeria to visit the States and we ran to meet him at the door, even after days of travel, his eyes would light up. When he was no longer able to visit as easily, he still called us to tell us how much he loved us and how much we meant to him. His love was so clear in everything he did. Some of my favorite memories were the children’s stories he would tell Anikwe and I when he came to visit. He seemed to have a never-ending supply of them, because whenever one was finished, we always asked for another! He told them with such energy that we would have to laugh, even when the stories were serious. He gave us necklaces and clothing to make sure we never forgot our roots and where we came from. His kindness and giving spirit enveloped us. But, by far, the greatest gift I received from my grandfather was his boundless love. I will always remember it and he will have a place in my heart forever.

Love,

Kanayo Alexander Duru
